Match Report
Copford cricket club 2 XI took a vital first victory under new captain Shashank Bezogan against
Copdock’s 3rd XI in the two counties, division seven championship.
Copdock won the toss and chose to bat first on a very green wicket on a hot and dry day at the ground,
however this is what Copford’s captain preferred as he ‘wanted to bowl first’ as a change from regularity
from the past 3 matches which have seen his team bat first and lose all three games.
Losing the toss was not a bad result for the home team as they took frequent wickets during
different phases during the away teams’ innings. Copford bowled brilliantly with the likes of star bowler Jonny Blanke taking three early wickets in his first six overs, Fellow bowler Ivan Humm followed suit to his young bowling compatriot as they both bowled with great fluency with the previously mentioned taking four wickets for 37 runs during his split bowling spell of 8 overs whilst the later taking
three wickets for 33 runs for his eventual back-to-back 12 over spell.
The performance wasn’t just for the bowling but the on field captaincy by Bezogan was a crucial part when it comes to fielding positions as well the different bowling changes required during the different phases of play when the side hadn’t take a wicket for 8 overs.
The negatives that could be argued in this case despite a fantastic bowling performance is the fielding, the
majority was generally good and sharp however a few dropped catches and miss fields throughout the
first innings plagues the question that the opposition should have been all out early.
This low target surely would mean that Copford would take a sure first victory.
However, this target was not made easy for the side as the team saw an early collapse at the top of the
order when being reduced to 43 for four seeing them struggle to produce a credible partnership at the
beginning of the innings, suggesting another potential loss on the cards, this was all put quickly to bed
with a one hundred and thirteen partnership for the fifth wicket between wicketkeeper Dan Smith with an
impressive 71 runs from 53 balls which was supported by Blanke as he scored 34 four runs from 44 balls
adding to his impressive bowling performance, this saw Copford clinch the victory with six wickets in
hand and fifteen overs remaining.
This victory builds hope and potential momentum for the 2nd XI going into future matches knowing they can take the required wickets and chase down a total to take victory.
